I have to make you disappointed. I have no plans to participate in the conference. There are two main reasons. This autumn I'm very busy at my work as we are migrating all our databases from Sybase ASE to MS SQL Server. The second reason is that I'm not using Paradox much any longer. I still follow the newsgroups to help other users, but some months I don't even launch Paradox at all at my work.

Well, I'm sure you know exactly what you have to do. Nevertheless I'd been very glad to see you here (it's a weekend!), too, if you're going to abandon Paradox. This would fit in the topic "future..." and "alternatives..."
Should you ever change your mind, I would be very glad.
If not, I'll accept (no other choice, indeed ).

I will continue to cover the Paradox newsgroups even though I don't use Paradox as a development tool. My main work now is database administration and web applications for collecting data.

this is good to read - some kind of good news within the "bad" ones.

I'm very interested in getting some aspects of your opinion about Paradox.
How is your decision (or the decision of the management of your company) related to the insecure future of Paradox (probably no investment of COREL/Vector to continue further developments of Paradox in the future)? I guess, you have had more knowledge about Paradox/COREL in the past as most of us have.
The concentration on MS SQL Server (or similar) seems to mark a general tendency. I often hear or read such reflections of IT-managers. The needs turn back to huge database-systems (mainframe-like?) and the trust in "proprietary" systems like Paradox without apparent guaranties for a stabile future influence (in my experience) most of them who are responsible for safe IT-investments (which often exceed one EUR or two .

In addition:
Do you have some thoughts about the future of Paradox you can share with the visitors of the Convention? Even if you can't be present personally?
Or - perhaps - are you bound to obligations not to talk about this issues publicly?

I'm working at Statistics Sweden, and when moving from DOS to Windows in the early 90's, the recommendation was to use Visual Basic. Some of us continued to use Paradox as we had used Paradox for DOS previously. For every year that passed, a few dropped of. So it's not a new decision but rather an old one.

For a couple of years I have being working with a Java based development tool, Silverstream, for creating web applications. With almost no knowledge of Java we were able to create the functionality we needed due to a very good integration with databases. Silverstream was developed by folks from PowerBuilder. Silverstream is/was also a webserver. In 2003, the company was bought by Novell. At that time, the development tool had changed into a tool to create portals, and that is not the way we had used it. So now we will leave it and probably move to .NET instead, as we don't use Java for in-house applications.

You know, it might has been understood as a sad signal if one of the "gurus" (well, I use this expression with a friendly smile) is letting Paradox by disappointment.

My tendency is, to do all possible to encourage the responsible of COREL to keep the track. But of course I'm conscious of my very poor influence in this point.
Hope to read furthermore postings of you and - if the circumstances and you will allow it - to meet you some day in Sweden for taking a cup of coffee or so.
As I've got my first extension of a then very narrow international horizon nearly 40 years ago in Sweden (while working as a student at "Intitutet för Tillämpad Psykologi" in Saltsköbaden), I've started (step by step without any stress) to relearn the Swedish language. Only for fun and I'm quite at the beginning.
